Princess Kate gets King’s final seal of approval with special loan from royal vault

Kate, the Princess of Wales got the ultimate seal of approval from King Charles III when he loaned her a “precious” tiara that once belonged to his beloved grandmother.

The Strathmore Rose tiara was presented to Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon to mark her wedding to future King George VI in 2023.

The Princess of Wales this week became the first member of the Royal Family to don the dazzling piece as she joined His Majesty, Queen Camilla and Prince William in hosting South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol at Buckingham Palace.

Jewellery expert Lauren Kiehna suggested the loan is a sign of the close relationship Kate shares with the King and shows he trusts her.

The Court Jeweller writer noted the Princess likely picked the piece with the help of her father-in-law to indicate she wants to keep royal traditions alive.

Kiehna said: “Kate has always signalled that she’d like to emulate the Queen Mother’s royal role and wearing her jewels is an important symbol of that continuity.

“It’s fitting that Kate — likely with some assistance from King Charles — would choose to wear the tiara exactly a hundred years after the Queen Mother originally received it.

“The piece is an antique that wasn’t fashionable for many decades, but many jewels once considered fussy or unstylish have now been embraced again.”

Author Bethan Holt pointed out His Majesty was especially close to his late grandmother, and letting Kate use her tiara after so many years away in the royal vault was quite “emotional”.

Holt told PEOPLE: “I think it’s lovely as the King was so close to the Queen Mother and knowing that one of her most precious pieces of jewelry is being worn by his daughter-in-law gives a really emotional tie between the generations.

“It has been said that Kate has looked for inspiration to the Queen Mother in terms of how she conducted herself and so to have that tiara symbolizing that, in such a public moment, I think it is really significant.

“I think if there was anyone to wear that tiara, it was Kate; she was the woman to wear it and carry it forward.”

While Elizabeth, the Queen Mother was known to wear the tiara across the forehead in a style very popular in the 1920s but Kate opted instead for a more traditional top-of-the-head position.

The tiara, which was inherited by Queen Elizabeth II in 2002, is estimated to be worth approximately £1.5 million.
