Ruan Irving joined Below Deck Mediterranean season 8 as the bosun; he seemed like a great fit before he had to leave due to paperwork inaccuracies. Monday night kicked off with the premiere episode for the new season of the Bravo series in the Italian Riviera following the success of Below Deck Down Under. However, it started with several issues, including missing crew members. Natalya Scudder had to take over as temporary chief stew as Tumi Mhlongo and Second Stew Kyle Viljoen were having visa issues. Nonetheless, Natalya did have Stew Jessika Asai and temporary Stew Brooke Booney to help her until Tumi and Kyle made it to the yacht.
Other than the missing Below Deck Med season 8 crew members, the new bosun Ruan started having issues onboard before leaving the dock. It began when Captain Sandy Yawn was informed by the MCA officer that Ruan’s paperwork was not accurate. Ruan allegedly submitted a medical license that was not certified, in fact, all of Ruan’s certifications were photocopies of the originals, which is an issue on commercial yachts. Sandy then received another call about his Yachtmasters, which appeared to be forged and included someone else’s photo. She was forced to leave Ruan at the dock until she received his correct paperwork, only for Ruan to tell Sandy that he would not be returning to the yacht.

Ruan’s exact age is currently unknown; however, BravoTV did reveal his birthday and zodiac sign. Ruan was born on July 24, which falls under the Leo zodiac sign. Leo’s are natural-born leaders, which makes sense since the South African native was chosen as the bosun, the leader of the deck team. They are also able to be open and honest and can easily express emotion, whether it’s sadness, anger, or happiness, which was seen in Ruan in the first episode of Below Deck Med season 8 before exiting the show

It seems Ruan has had more experience on private boats, rather than commercial boats, seeing as he had an issue with his license on the new Below Deck Med yacht Mustique. Since exiting Below Deck Med season 8, Ruan found love with his new girlfriend, Nicola King. In an Instagram post from May 2023, Ruan revealed that the pair had been dating for two months and were still going strong. He wrote in the caption, “So much to see, just you and me […] Been about 2 months now since we started this travelling journey together, I’m so proud of the strength and willingness you’ve shown! Keep pushing My ride or die.” Ruan shared another photo of the two in early August 2023, where he is showing his appreciation for Nicola.
Even though Ruan left Below Deck Mediterranean season 8 after just one episode, he made quite the impression on viewers. He had major issues with his licenses, which upset Captain Sandy, causing her to see red flags in Ruan. He also received news that one of his best friends had passed away before the end of their first day on the yacht. Maybe it was all for the best that Ruan decided to leave so he could focus on himself.
