I’m a royal stylist and here’s the best TikTok hack to achieve Princess Kate’s waves

Princess Kate’s hair and various hairstyles throughout the years have been the object of envy to many royal fans worldwide.

The Princess of Wales was recently spotted sporting a new ‘do, her signature tousled waves with a new curtain fringe, and according to a royal hairdresser, it’s very easy to recreate.

Award-winning hairdresser, Michael Van Clarke, who used to style Princess Diana’s hair in the 1980s, said Kate’s new autumn hairstyle had added a “softness around her face and a lift to the hair”

He told PEOPLE: “Fringes do need a bit more styling maintenance, but they’re very versatile.”

The hair expert went on to explain that while the royal’s effortless fringe is trickier to achieve, her loose waves can be styled with different techniques, including one that’s very easy to do and has been trending on TikTok.

He stated: “You need to use large barrelled tongs, flat irons or — even better — use a no-heat version by wrapping your hair around soft sponge rollers or even a towelling robe belt, which is a technique you see on TikTok a lot!

“It’s actually very easy to do! It’s basically replicating the old idea of wrapping hair in rags, but it works.”

To achieve Princess Kate’s curtain bangs, the hairdresser said that “less is more”.

He explained: “I would use a dryer and a round brush, but a heated brush may be easier at home. Just be careful not to put too much curl in.

“This look on the Princess of Wales is subtle — it’s meant to look like it fell naturally like that.”

Van Clarke also stressed that it’s all about the preparation and strongly urged anyone attempting to recreate Kate’s look to use products that act as a heat protector and shine and curl enhancers, as well as a blow dry spray.

The expert added that many royal women opt for longer hair because “it is more reliable, it’s more likely to stay doing what it’s supposed to do and once it’s blow-dried, the weight of it helps hold the style.

“She’s got good hair, and she maintains it very well. What’s nice is that when the hair is back, the look at the front is much softer — it’s a positive change.”
