Prince William’s Unconventional Move: Breaking Royal Protocol Just Two Weeks After Kate Middleton

Prince William.

Prince William, 41, seemed to be following in wife Kate Middleton’s, 41, footsteps earlier this week. While at a BEST charity event, the Prince of Wales was caught taking a selfie with a volunteer, effectively breaking royal protocol.

Meghan Markle, 42, famously revealed back in 2017 that members of the royal family are discouraged from taking selfies with royal followers.

While selfies aren’t officially prohibited, royal experts have pointed out that they’re frowned upon because they’re less personal than a face-to-face interaction and can also be problematic for security reasons (you have to get *quite* close to a royal to take one, after all).

However, Prince William didn’t seem too bothered in a post that was uploaded to the Instagram account he shares with Princess Catherine. In the first pic, the prince is seen smiling for a selfie with two BEST volunteers. (FYI: BEST—Be a Better You is a charity aimed at helping kids with social, emotional and mental health barriers through sports and mentoring.)

This move came as less of a surprise given that Prince Williams’s other half did the same thing a mere two weeks ago.

While visiting Streets of Growth—a youth intervention charity in east London—Princess Catherine was seen posing for a selfie with one of the workers at the charity. The moment was captured in a photo courtesy of Peter Nicholls.

This certainly isn’t the first time we’ve seen these royals pose for selfies. Back in 2022, the Wales couple visited the Wheatley Group in Glasgow, where they ended up smiling for a picture with a royal admirer outside of the building.

You know what they say: Rules are meant to be broken.
