Princess Kate and Prince William have been happily married for 12 years.

The royal couple tied the knot at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011, and the big day was watched by millions of people worldwide.

But not many people know that the Princess of Wales had actually broken a 350-year-old tradition for her special day.

Kate stunned the world as she stepped out in the now iconic £355,000 Alexander McQueen wedding dress which everyone talked about.

But there was also much discussion around her hairstyle.

According to royal expert Ashley Pearson, Kate was advised to wear her hair in a sleek updo but she instead asked to have her hair down.

The expert explained during a documentary on the couple: “Royal sources tell me that the royals indicated very strongly to Kate that they would prefer her to wear her hair up for this very special occasion.

“However, Kate had her heart set on wearing her hair down with long flowing curls, which is her favourite way to wear it and actually William’s favourite as well.

“They ended up compromising on her look.”

Prince William revealed he had not asked Kate’s father, Michael Middleton, for his permission before proposing to his now wife.

He explained during their famous engagement interview in 2010: “Well, I was torn between asking Kate’s dad first and then the realisation that he might actually say ‘no’ dawned upon me.

“So I thought if I ask Kate first then he can’t really say no. So I did it that way round. I managed to speak to Mike soon after it happened really and then it sort of happened from there.”
